Therapies for treating acne

There are various procedures/therapies available that can help in treating the acne. These procedures do have side effects and should be performed by licensed dermatologists only.


  1. Light therapy: There are options to different kinds of light based procedures that can be performed by the dermatologists and can bring success to the patients. Light therapy specifically targets the bacteria called p. acnes that is the main culprit in causing the acne inflammation. There is an option of Blue Light therapy which can be done at patient’s home. This therapy has side effects of redness, sensitivity to sunlight and even pain.

  2. Chemical Peels: This procedure is strictly done at the dermatologist’s office. A chemical solution of salicylic acid is used repeatedly. This procedure would derive better results if combined with other acne treatments. These peels should not be performed if the patient is taking oral retinoids due to significant skin irritation. The peels can cause long term discoloration and temporary severe redness, scaling and blistering.

  3. Removing acne: A dermatologist may choose to perform a procedure which can remove large acne cyst. This procedure should be done if the cysts do not respond to medicine. This procedure can minimize the risk of getting a scar and pain can be reduced. Sometimes a dermatologist can inject a cyst with medicine to speed up the process.

  4. Whiteheads and blackheads extraction: This procedure can be performed by the dermatologists and skin care specialists (aestheticians) as well. A took is used gently to remove the whiteheads and blackheads which do not respond to topical medicine. It used to done with caution as it can cause scarring.
