DETERMINING THE SKIN TYPE

There are 5 skin types: normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, combination skin and sensitive skin.

NORMAL SKIN

Normal skin is clear, pimple free, soft, smooth and without any flaky areas. The skin is neither dry nor greasy. However before the monthly menstruation, some women might develop pimples. This usually happens due to hormonal activity which causes the sebaceous glands to go overactive. But acne would never be a concern for this type of skin. Any kind of negligence in taking care of the skin can lead to wrinkling and aging. If taken care of, it has a healthy complexion.

DRY SKIN

Dry skin usually feels tight and flaky. Pores are almost never noticeable. Pores are finer compare to other skin types but can have fine lines due to dry skin. Dryness can lead to irritation. Good news for dry skin is it hardly breaks into pimples. Dry skin has to be extra careful because the dryness can lead to wrinkling and aging of skin early on in youth.

OILY SKIN

Oily skin is almost always shiny and greasy in look and prone to pimples, larger pores and blackheads. Severe acne can occur with oily skin, especially as a teenager but can even happen in adult years. After each wash the skin feels refreshed but after a while it looks shiny. The texture of the skin seems to be coarse and thick. Unfortunately, this is the most problematic skin type.

COMBINATION SKIN

As name applies, if the skin has more than one skin type characteristics, it is a combination skin. If the skin feels taut/tight and flaky on the cheeks but oily on the T-zone: forehead, nose and chin, more than likely it is a combination skin. After each wash some areas would be smooth whereas the other would be dry and rough. The T-zone is prone to breakouts and it also becomes shiny. It is also estimated that most of the women have this kind of skin. If the chin and nose are oily and the forehead is known to be drier, then it is defined as normal-to-combination skin type

SENSITIVE SKIN

Sensitive skin is the most delicate of all skin types. This skin feels tight, very itchy and even It is prone to redness, dryness and irritation. Unfortunately, sensitive skin is seen in many people these days. It is easily prone to irritation like stinging, chafing and even itching. It has to be given special care. After each wash the sensitive skin feels dry and itchy at places. As the day advances and by the midday there is a presence of flaky patches as well as redness seen. It is also prone to breakouts.
